Cresting the curve

I was going to post about this last week but it seemed better to wait and see if a trend was occurring rather than a downward blip. It seems that the rate of infections in Belgium has started to reduce and hopefully we have seen the worst of the second wave. The only daily number still rising is the number of deaths but that is most likely due to the lag effect of previously infected people succumbing to the disease. Last that I saw the Rt rate was at 0.84 and looking like falling further. Dodging a bullet

Luckily the average rate of daily new infections never reached the 20000 figure that the powers that be seemed to be scared of but instead peaked at around 15000, this is in a country of somewhere above eleven million inhabitants. Even so, the news reports seem to suggest that the health system in Belgium had just about reached it’s maximum capacity. Patients where being transferred around Belgium to ease the pressure on hospitals in the worse effected areas and even then, that became not enough to alleviate the situation. At the height of the crises patients where evacuated to Germany, by road and helicopter and Belgian military medical personnel were deployed to some hospitals to set up extra wards. I am no expert on the matter but it seems to me that the medical facilities, here in Belgium, were on the precipice of a breaking point and it is lucky that new measures came into effect just in time to change the trend in the infection rate of the virus.
