COVID 19 Belgium – Situation Dire And Getting Worse

Belgium is a land of just over 11 million souls. As I write this, on Saturday 24th of October, the average daily new infection rate for the disease is over 10 thousand people a day. This means that 1 percent of the population is being infected in less than a 2 week period. You can read more about this in…

Average daily infection rates are expected to breach 20 thousand before the end of next week. You can read about this in…

One week ago, the new government imposed new measures to help curtail the spread of the virus. These included a return to home working for those that can, closing all bars and restaurants, imposing a curfew from midnight until 5am, banning the sale of alcohol after 8 pm and limiting everyone to having one close contact outside of their household.

As of 24th of October further measures have been imposed nationwide. These include professional sports games can still take place, but without an audience, amateur games for everyone over 18-years-old will be prohibited, games for youth up to 18 are also still allowed but only one person per family can attend, a maximum of 20% of students is allowed to be present in an auditorium or classroom and no more than 200 people are allowed at the same time in theatres, cinemas and concert halls. You can read more about this in…

Even stricter measures are being enforced in Brussels and Wallonia. You can see more through the following two links.

WALLONIA

If anyone has friends or family in Belgium and they want to have an idea of how things are going where they live, you can follow the link below, scroll down the page, type in the name of their municipality and that will give you a figure for how many people have tested positive for the disease in that area over the last two weeks.

REGIONAL CORONAVIRUS INFECTIONS IN BELGIUM

Personally, I am still in good health but am feeling very weary of all this. It feels like the virus is doing to Belgium what is happening in this GIF.

Everybody stay safe and do the best to protect yourselves and those around you

THE SUNDAY SWISHING ā€“ AND A VISIT TO DURBUY

Feel The Rage Of The Machine

Durbuy, Arguably The Smallest City In The World

I think that there will be other competitors to the title “World’s Smallest City”, It’s a bit like “England’s Oldest Pub”, there must be more than twenty of those. Durbuy is tiny though, if you judged it on size it would only count as a village. It is a beautiful little place to visit though, located on the banks of the River Ourthe with many tiny, ancient streets to explore.

There is a stately home in the city but this is not generally open to the public

And an amazing rock formation that has been turned into a feature, with the addition of a large pond and fountain

I finished my day of sauntering around this little burg with a visit to the topiary gardens

On Tuesday I will post the last of my holiday snaps that where taken as I explored the River Ourthe

THE SUNDAY SWISHING – AND A VISIT TO BOUILLON

More Fun Than Last Week’s Coffee Morning

First Pictures Of Bouillon

The next destination on my recent travels was the beautiful little town of Bouillon. The campsite here has an amazing location on the River Semois

Time to play spot The Little Devil, my campervan. I will give you a clue, The Little Devil is the van wearing the blindfold šŸ™‚

There are two nice walking paths along the Semois. Down stream is a challenging rough path (unfortunately I did not take the camera on that walk) and upstream is a more civilized 1 kilometre path that leads to the town and the castle

More about the castle in Tuesday’s post. For now I will leave you with some views of the lovely town of Bouillon and it’s surroundings

COVID 19 Belgium – AKA My Christmas Is Cancelled

When I went away on my vacation, the COVID situation in Belgium had started improving again, after some higher numbers probably due to the easing of restrictions. I had hoped that this trend would be continuing when I returned. I looked at the news, for the first time in two weeks and found instead that Belgium had gone into meltdown with infection rates sky-rocketing and Belgium being declared a red zone by the UK authorities. This is unlikely to change and so I have cancelled my usual Christmas visit to the UK, which is normally the only time that I get to see family members, B(swear word censored)R.

In Belgium the population is a little over 11,000,000. As I write this on Saturday 26th of September, the daily new infection rates are over 1500 people a day and rising. Hospitalization rates are also rising fast. Fortunately the daily death rate seems to be holding steady at an average of about 3 to 4 people a day, mostly because most of the newly infected are of the younger generations, let’s hope that stays that way. The R rate for the whole of Belgium is over 1.3 and is above 1 in every Province. For a more detailed look at the recent figures, please follow the link below.

CORONAVIRUS 19 FROM THE BRUSSELS TIMES

I have no idea what the immediate future holds for us. The Vivaldi group have finally pulled their fingers out and managed to form a governing coalition, please don’t ask me how Belgian politics works as that much typing could cause a wrist injury. This should mean that we have a new national Government on the 1st of October. What they will do about the situation remains to be seen.

Take care and stay safe everybody
